My Sad Breakup with Bare Escentuals

So most people that know me personally, know that I have been a huge advocate of Bare Minerals. I've been using myself for about six years, and have used it on clients as well. I was pleased with the coverage, appreciated the lightness on my skin, and thought it was great that it added nutrients to the skin.

About a year ago, I started having some skin issues. Mind you, I have a full on facial setup in my home. I'm certified in diamond microdermabrasion and have an additional facial machine where I can do disincrustation and galvanic facials. I also do glycolic peels regularly, and TCA peels periodically. It felt like as soon as I was removing gunk from my pores, it was back the next day. I had TONS of blackheads...on my face and my NECK. I could also feel dozens on tiny bumps when I'd run my fingertips over my face. I could not understand the source of the problem...especially with the care I take with my skin,

One day I decided to do some online research. I typed in "bare minerals + acne" and was floored with what I found. Although marketed as great for problem skin, for others it can CAUSE the problems. A lot of people are sensitive to the ingredients in mineral makeup, and many have problems with excessive blackhead buildup and tiny bumps. Without looking back, I stopped using the line.

Six months later, my skin is finally back to normal. I'm back to using MAC powder/foundation, and find I have to do microdermabrasion and peels much less frequently. I no longer have the strange bumps.

If you have sensitive skin and have had some trouble using mineral makeup, SWITCH!! :)

Wildtree Food Products

So after some careful research and consideration, I've jumped on the Wildtree train. One of my girlfriends had a party a few weeks ago for a friend of hers who was visiting, and we had a tasting. GREAT STUFF. All natural, no preservatives, msg, additives or dyes -- simple mixes for great meal planning. When you're healthy on the inside, it shows on the outside, in things like your skin and hair. If you're interested in ordering any of the food, you can visit my website. If you're local and want to host a tasting, contact me directly!

Superior Curl Product!!!

I have finally found a curl product that I am absolutely in love with. It is perfect for scrunching and allowing your hair to air dry, or to diffuse your curls with. It is the Moroccan Oil "Intense Curl Cream".

The Intense Curl Cream gives great definition to your curls without a crunchy feel once the hair is dry. I am thrilled with the results I've gotten on my clients' hair!

We do sell this at the salon, and you can also access their website if you're not a client of mine at http://www.moroccanoil.com/

To Tourmaline, or not to Tourmaline...That is the question

A friend of mine emailed me today, and asked which I felt was better, a tourmaline or ceramic flat iron? As an industry professional, we are constantly being bombarded with marketing gimmicks on what is the latest and greatest, and sometimes it leaves us scratching our heads, because we have TOO much to choose from.

I decided to do a little research, and found another great blog called www.thebeautybrains.com. Cosmetic chemists run the blog, and they answer questions people have about what is really in products. What I basically gathered from what I read, is that a lot of what we are told is exactly what is sounds like....MARKETING GIMMICKS. Tourmaline irons are also made of ceramic, with tourmaline bits in it. And there is a lot of question on whether the tourmaline's "negative ions" actually do a darn thing for hair.

With that being said, it is more important that you invest in an iron that is either solid ceramic or is coated with a FEW coats of ceramic vs just one or two coats, and that the iron heats evenly and is dependable. Personally, I love the CHI, and I also have the Solano Saffire iron and I recently started using a Wet to Dry T-3. All are great. I have yet to be thrilled with any irons that do not come from professional hair care brands. (and that includes what you find at places like Sally's) Make sure if you're investing in a good iron, that you don't buy it in a place that sometimes gets diverted product, like a grocery store or store like Target. Truly professional irons are not distributed by manufacturers to stores like that, so they are often counterfeit, old, etc. Your stylist can recommend a good place to find one. (or he/she can get it ordered for you!)

Happy flatironing!

Backlash on Brazillian and Keratin Smoothing systems

There has been a lot of negative publicity lately about some of the Keratin and/or Brazillian straightening systems that are out there. All of the companies that manufacture smoothing systems have come under the gun, both nationally and internationally, and some are being found to have UNSAFE levels of formaldehyde that is emitted in gas form when the treatment is flat ironed into the hair. Specifically, Brazillian Blowout is at the heart of a lot of these allegations, since an Oregon stylist sent samples to OSHA and they deemed it unsafe.

As a stylist, I am EXTREMELY concerned about the safety of any products the salon or I endorse. Alison and I have gone through extensive research (and to be honest, downright nagging in some cases on my part :) ) to be sure that we are getting the full details on what we are using on our clients. Not only for the safety of our clients, but for us as well....I would not want my career shortened because a product made me permanently too ill to work in this industry. Chemicals such as these are actually more harmful for the stylists performing the services, because we are exposed to them on a much more intense level.

Coppola has provided us with a press release that was released in October of this past year. The details that are important (to us anyway) is that there is no formaldehyde in the product itself at all, and the aldehyde that is used as a preservative is a very small amount (.009% - legal maximum amount is .2%) and the special silicones that are used to lock the keratin into the hair also encapsulate any aldehyde and prevent any gases from being formed. This is wonderful news, and it was followed by a loud "whew!" from me! We are still fully endorsing this product, and are happy to not only provide the full system, but also an express "blowout" that lasts 4-6 weeks at a more affordable price.

I have had the blowout done on my hair, and for those of you who know me...I have thick, wavy hair that takes approximately 30 minutes to blow out nicely. My blowdry time has been cut down to 15 minutes, and my hair looks much healthier!

If you are not currently a client of mine, but found this post through a google search looking for information on these service types, CONSUMER BEWARE. Do your research. There are a bunch of lawsuits right now involving different companies. Some companies are not using an aldehyde as a preservative, but are using actual formaldehyde to break down the bonds of your hair. You will get the smoothest effect out of any of the systems out there with a treatment like that, but at what cost? Some of these treatments are emitting formaldehyde levels of between 5-20%!!!! The legal limit is .2%!!! Formaldehyde is a recognized carcinogen...high exposure is linked to brain cancer, in addition to other illnesses. Take care of your body...it's the only one you've got!

Great Yahoo! Article on Hair Health

Here is a great article just published on Yahoo! about general hair health and recognizing different problems along the way. I have people asking me about this kind of thing all the time. Great information....and as always, if any of the more serious problems persist, your doctor is always the best person to talk to.

Yesterday's "Hair Myth" article on Yahoo! News

There was an article posted on Yahoo! yesterday that was originally from "Good Housekeeping", about hair myths. While they had some decent points with some things, their article was not 100% factual. So I am going to post the article then include my thoughts.

Don't Be Fooled by These Hair-Care Myths

partner

Think brushing your hair 100 strokes each night is healthy? Will frequent trims really make your hair grow faster? Read on to discover the simple truths behind great hair.

Myth: Frequent trims make hair grow faster.
Truth: "Hair grows a half-inch per month, whether you cut it or not," says John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon in New York City. Hair may grow slightly faster in the summer, but that has nothing to do with the stylist's scissors and everything to do with hormones, which do speed growth a little. One thing a trim will do: Eliminate split ends, making hair look better.
** Agreed. It won't make it grow faster, but if you don't trim your hair often enough, your hair will start to "cut itself", in the form of split ends and breakage. This helps diminish that.

Myth:
Stress can make your hair fall out.
Truth: Although your hair is falling out all the time, to the tune of 50 to 120 strands per day, it's possible that you may lose a few more strands when you're "catastrophically" stressed, meaning you have had a major life change such as a divorce, lost job, or surgery, says Gerome Litt, M.D., an assistant professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. "Other culprits are pregnancy or antibiotics. After a few weeks, it will almost certainly grow back."
**WRONG...Traumatic Alopecia is a very real problem. People have been known to lose hair over severe stress and trauma, and it doesn't always grow back quickly.

Myth: Switching shampoos can make hair look healthier.
Truth: It may seem so, but experts scoff. "Hair can't tell the difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product," says London-based hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley. "Your favorite shampoo will work the same every time you lather up, week after week, month after month." If you have very oily hair or favor a particularly sticky styling product that contains wax, it does pay to use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks to wash away residue. Good Housekeeping's Beauty Department recommends Redken Hair Cleansing Cream and Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo.
**Agreed...and look, they love the two clarifying shampoos that I do!!!!

Myth: If you pluck out one gray hair, two or three will sprout in its place.
Truth: While this isn't true, plucking out those gray strands is a bad habit. You can damage the roots, causing infection or leaving a scar.
**Agreed. and if you pull it out, when it grows back it will be more noticeable when it is short and is sticking out.

Myth: You can't make flat, fine hair look full of body.
Truth:
Five minutes with a set of large hot rollers will add life to straight hair.
**WRONG!! Some fine hair is actually missing a part of the hair that gives it elasticity and allows it to hold curl. This part is called the Medulla. If you have fine hair that won't hold a curl for more than a few minutes, you are most likely missing this part of your hair. There is no roller that can create this missing link for you. Perms are usually a good alternative for a finer haired person that really longs for curl.

Myth: Rinsing with ice-cold water after a shampoo will give you shinier hair.
Truth:
It might wake you up, but a dousing of cold water will have no effect on the shininess of your tresses.
**Agree and Disagree. Cold water seals the hair cuticle, which when left open, creates the illusion of frizziness. If you seal the cuticle, the hair can appear slightly shinier. Rinsing with cool water also helps preserve the life of your color.

Myth:
Coloring your hair causes major damage.
Truth:
Products today — both at home and in the salon — are gentle enough not to weaken hair. In fact, some contain extra conditioners that may leave hair more manageable than before. Although it's not necessary, "it can't hurt to consult a professional stylist the first time you do anything permanent to your hair or scalp," Kingsley counsels.
**Agreed

Myth:
You should brush your hair 100 strokes every day
Truth:
"Brush it only to style it, because brushing pulls hairs out of their follicles and possibly weakens individual strands," says Kingsley.
**Agree and Disagree -- You don't want to overdo it, but brushing well before washing your hair is great to loosen oil from your scalp and allowing for a great shampoo, while distributing some of your natural oils through the rest of your hair

Myth: You can mend split ends with the right products
Truth:
Once they're split, that's it. The only thing you can do then is cut them off. Celebrity stylist Jimmy Paul suggests making split ends less noticeable by applying a product containing silicone or beeswax. It will temporarily seal ends together, making hair softer and more manageable. Try: John Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops and John Barrett Bee Hold.
**Agreed, but I prefer Moroccan Oil :)

Extensions!!!

We are happy to announce that we are now using the Ultratress Extensions. They are FABULOUS!!! The hair is high quality and they are virtually seamless. I will be doing Alison's extensions on Thursday, and plan on taking lots of pictures before and after, so for those of you who are thinking about having them done, you'll have a good idea of what they look like.

I know Alison is excited...so am I!

Trends at the Orlando Hair Convention 2010

I always have people asking me "what's new and up and coming" when it comes to hair. Honestly, there's very little that's not popular right now. Some people still love the super straight look. Natural texture and wave are still very popular. Texturized cuts, blunt cuts, side bangs, heavy bang, no bang...you get the gist. I've also been seeing a lot of braids.

When it comes to color, everyone is so different. I still have a large request for chunkier highlights, but not the same "color blocking" that I saw two years ago. I also have a lot of requests for natural looking color.

One thing about me, if you don't know already. I can do "blended" highlights and lowlights. Do I like them? Not really. Will I try to talk you out of having them super blended? YES. Most people I talk to love the look of children's hair...when it is untouched and naturally highlighted/lowlighted. If you look at a kid's hair, their colors are not completely blended...you will see some areas that are heavier and some that are lighter. That's the way I like to do color. Come to me for your SIGNATURE look...not for the same old highlights that everyone does. :)

Scheduling Appointments

Hi All!

I recently celebrated my one year anniversary with Shear Elegance Salon of Trinity, which is, in my opinion, the best salon in the Trinity area. :) I am happy to continue to call that salon my home, and thank all of my clients, old and new, for their patronage over the past year. (and some, for tracking me down after all of the chaos at George Josef!)

For new clients that are looking to schedule appointments with me at the salon, please specify that you'd like an appointment with me when you call, so I can ensure you end up in my chair. :) I'm looking forward to meeting you soon!

Favorite Product Lines

So I have a lot of people that ask me on a regular basis for recommendations on various products. While I am Redken born and raised, and I will always recommend their products first, there are people who like to question other product lines as well. So, here are my favorites:

Favorite Clarifying Shampoos: Redken Hair Cleansing Cream or Pravana Sulfate Free Clarifying Shampoo. (When on a strict budget, I can also comfortably recommend Neutrogena "The Anti-Residue Shampoo". If you need a GOOD clarifying and the shampoo doesn't do the trick, you need a salon service for the Redken "Pre Art" system.

Favorite Smoothing Shampoos: Redken Smooth Down or Real Control. Alternative lines: Bumble and Bumble Coco, Phyto, Tigi "Control Freak".

Favorite Volumizing Shampoos: My pic on this is one product, and it's the Matrix Volumizing Shampoo. It smells super clean and gets all the gunk out of your hair to make it feel light and bouncy.

Favorite Line for people with thinning hair: Nioxin. If there is hair to be grown, Nioxin will provide the perfect conditions on your scalp for it to grow.

Favorite Deep Conditioners: Redken Real Control Intensive Renewal Alternative Lines: S Factor deep conditioning treatment; Moroccan Oil hair masks, Tigi "Dumb Blonde" for reconstructing damaged hair.

Favorite Oil: Moroccan. Hands Down. As of right now, I can't find a competing brand that is similar enough as far as benefits and features go.

Favorite Blow Dry lotion: Redken Satinwear 02. You can also combine this with the 06 straightening balm for some extra hold, or ringlet 07 if you're blowing it out to have some bend at the ends. (both of these have anti-humectant properties to fight humidity.) When the weather isn't so humid, I often combine Satinwear with 07 Velvet Gelatine. Alternative lines: Moroccan Oil Hydrating Styling Cream.

Favorite Texturizer/Paste: Rewind 06. I just love it for shorter cuts, or to show off piece-y layers.

Favorite Hairspray: Ok, I will say that Redken holds great, but I am picky about scents of products. I don't care for the scents of any of the redken sprays. SO, my recommendations are Rusk W8less for a soft hold, Sebastian Shaper for a stronger hold, and White Sands for an extreme, "once in a while" updo glue type of hold. I also like "Big Sexy Hair".

Favorite Blow dryer: I love my Babyliss Nano Titanium 2000Watt dryer. My last one lasted me three years of working on clients, and is still working. I've upgraded to the newer, lighter version, and I love it just as much. At home, I use a Bed Head dryer that I love as well, that is more of a budget friendly option.

Favorite flat iron: Chi or Solano Sapphire. Solanos have a comb attachment, so it's good for gals with long hair. Chi is a reliable iron that I love, but must be used carefully by women with finer hair. ALWAYS protect your hair with a heat protectant product.

My favorite heat protectant is Satinwear 02 because it doesn't have much of a feel to it at all, so it won't seem like you have "product" on your hair when you're done.

***Please know that my "favorites" are subject to change at any time. I am constantly trying new products to find what I feel most comfortable recommending to you!***

Day I won't be available in August

Hi folks, I just wanted to let everyone know ahead of time that I won't be in the salon on Saturday, August 14th. It's my birthday and well....I just wanted a nice four day weekend. :) I hope this doesn't inconvenience anybody, and I made sure my schedule is already blocked off. Just letting everyone else know, in case you were planning on scheduling your appointment around that time.

It's that time of year again!

The holidays are quickly approaching! If I didn't get the reminders when I'm shopping in the stores and they are already playing holiday music, the shift in how busy the salon has become is a definite reminder that Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah and New Years are almost here.

We have a few things going on over the next month. First, the salon will be closed on Thanksgiving and the day after. We will also be closed on Christmas Day and the day after that. (We will be open for half day only on Christmas Eve) I will double check and repost about New Years, because I'm not sure when we are open for that holiday.

Next, we are throwing a holiday open house to show appreciation to all of our clients for a great beginning at Shear Elegance. That will be from 7-9pm on Tuesday December 22nd. We will have wine tastings, light snacks, and will be raffling away four HUMUNGOUS and WONDERFUL gift baskets with tons of goodies by Redken, ZOYA, Qtica, etc. Each gift basket has two gift certificates in it as well.

Lastly, just a reminder to everyone...make your appointments when you can. The holiday season is our busiest time, and we want to accomodate everyone. Nothing upsets me more than to find out I can't fit a client into my schedule when they need it. We are already booked for most of this week, and December is filling up quickly. If you know you need to get in, let us know!!! I want everyone to feel beautiful for the holidays. :)

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

I'm back!!!!

Hi Everybody!

I'm back to the salon, as a married woman, and also certified in microdermabrasion. :) Stay tuned...I'm hoping to eventually get my own microderm machine so I can start offering that service in addition to skin care.

My first day back at the salon was today, and our wedding was October 10th. We honeymooned in Key West, and I got to bring my shih tzu, Callie, with us. It was a great time. I'm still trying to get used to my new last name.....

Hope to post a few pictures soon!

We've done a few of the Coppola Keratin Straightening services recently at the salon. Each were a success. We've gotten a lot of feedback, and some people are overwhelmed by the price. The cost is definitely significant, but people love the results and the fact that it puts keratin back into the hair. Most don't know that it actually costs the salon almost TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS just to purchase the quantity of product needed for one client's hair, in addition to the products you take home for maintenance. One bottle of the straightener alone costs over three hundred dollars!!! So in light of that, we are charging competitively for the service. We also include the complimentary (but mandatory) follow up shampoo and blow dry 72 hours later. We've gotten rave reviews so far, so I hope it continues!
